Mallorca IV

The Friday we spent in Palma de Mallorca and I was surprised how big the city is (I mean, it has it's own Metro trains!) and wasn't expecting to find many pretty and non-touristy corners...and some cats of course

Mallorca III

the long and winding road to - Cap Formentor, the most northerly part of the island! On the way we ended up in the middle of a bike race...driving through the mountains though we had goats walking over the roads too :-)

Little Miss Scatterbrain

 vs.
metscan.blogspot.com

I think of myself as a woman of many talents; I can cook, have a very good sense of orientation and I'm good at making bargains and deciding on the right hotel after many sleepless nights of internet research. One thing though I suck at. Unfortunately something closely related to my hotel picking talent - I can't pack for a holiday (and I already can hear my husband clap enthusiastically when he reads this).

I have been in Guernsey without mascara, I have been all over Europe without a toothbrush (I bought one there as soon as I got to a shop, don´t worry), last year I travelled Tuscany wearing my very own 80s revival - I packed the blue mascara instead of black. In Bruges we ended up with 4 different bottles of shampoo, but minus a shower gel. A few weeks ago in Hambburg I realised there were not enough pants and last week my highlight: I arrived at Palma de Mallorca airport on a lovely warm day suddenly realizing I forgot to pack any shorts...or skirts...or dresses.
It usually all starts so well. I fantasize about the perfect capsule wardrobe. Wanna be stylish and wear red lipstick in Paris, wanna be slightly more edgy for cities and show some laid back chique on a mediteranean island. I draw little sketches, I write lists...and then I do nothing, put something in the suitcase, take some out, forget about it, write more lists, and throw in a few completely non-matching things in it the morning of departure.
Think it probably is connected to me pretty constantly on the move, the act of packing and leaving has become something so normal that I don´t bother a lot anymore.
Next time my husband promised to pack for me...well let's wait and see :-)
Not sure I will ever be on a beach without long jeans or in Rome with sunglasses but will always pack a pair of ripped tights or the pair of shoes that has the dodgy laces...tell me, are you a perfectionist when it comes to packing or a travelling mess like me?

PS:  Right now I´m missing my glasses and my iPod charger by the way - they will wait for me in England when I return.

Mallorca II

the second day we drove North and our first stop was the pretty town called Artà...

Rush

director: Ron Howard
year: 2013
with: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, etc.

plot: Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s, the film is based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt, and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Austrian driver Niki Lauda. The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error: if you make a mistake, you die.

what I liked: At the beginning Hunt and Lauda both get portrayed very disagreeable in their own way, at the end you sympathise with both of them. The two different characters are played convincingly by Hemsworth (ed. if Sex and the City would be filmed now, he would definitely be Samantha´s next absolute hunk ;-)) and German favourite Daniel Brühl. The latter does an absolutely amazing job speaking English while imitating Lauda´s characteristical Austrian accent.

what I didn´t like: I always have troubles if fictional scenes "enhance" the story in order to make a more entertaining and convincing film out of true facts. This was clearly the case here, Niki Lauda probably never raced around Italian vineyards with some cheering Italians on the backseats to impress his future wife...but well, dramaturgy has it´s own rules and needs, even a purist like me has to accept that sometimes. Alexandra Maria Lara as Lauda´s wife would have deserved a better script than just standing in the pit lane/hospital corridors/anywhere else and looking worried.

verdict: If someone who has never heard of James Hunt before, never overly worried about the persona of Niki Lauda and is only vaguely interested in Formula 1 enjoyed those two hours a lot, it means the film was good!

Mallorca I

Here the first part of pictures I took during our spontaneous short break to Mallorca last week. Although being sceptical at first (El Arenal and Magaluf - do I need to say more?!?) I must admit, I loved it! It was sunny and warm while the first wave of cold weather hit Germany and not too busy.
We stayed at the Eurotel Puntja Rotja which was fantastic and offered a large room with a balcony overlooking the sea, a superb breakfast buffet and an always empty pool for some late evening (or in Spanish opinion late afternoon lol) swimming.

Brum

Recently I found several offers from Chiltern Railways for very cheap train tickets to Birmingham Moor Street from London Marylebone...first I went in July thinking that 5£ return was amazing for a day trip - last week then I jumped onto a train (comfy, on time and with free wi-fi) again and paid 50p, a nearly obscene price really.
Birmingham is not a particularly pretty or exciting city but it is large, far enough away and: I haven't been there before, a good enough reason to go!

So here a few photos I took during my first trip...I had a look around the shops (and there are many I can tell you), the museum, the only recently opened library and the Birmingham Back to Backs

love Chloé...or Pull&Bear

If you happen to love a certain Chloé scent, namely "Love Chloé" and feel that it is a little bit expensive than check this out: Spanish fashion chain "Pull&Bear" has it´s own scent called "Phyllis" which, to my nose, smells pretty much the same! Heavy, powdery and long-lasting. Comes in a huge bottle and costs comparatively little money.

Friday 4 October 2013

on the road 10

a train between Darmstadt and Wiesbaden in the afternoon, two male students in their very early 20s are having a chat in the seats in front of me.

a: Hope I´m finding a girlfriend soon...
b: Don´t you have any decent ones studying with you?
a: No way! They all look awful! I can´t go out with a girl studying engineering like me!
b: So what are you looking for?
a: Don´t know...someone pretty...should be studying interior design...
b: Yeah! I have seen them after their lecture, they all look stunning! Wooahh...
a: They do! Or she could be a florist or something nice like that.
b: I´m feeling the same. I´m never gonna marry a female engineer.
a: Never!

Well lads, at least you know what you want. But maybe it helps with finding the right girl if you broaden your horizont a bit ;-)

Egal was.
