Was ist gerade links neben dir?

Was würdest Du Deine Eltern gern mal fragen?

Glaubst Du an Karate-Gürtel?

Wann kaufst Du in diesem Jahr Weihnachtsgeschenke?

11 Fragen

Ich wurde getaggt! Und wisst ihr was?! Ich liebe Tags :-)
    Dankeschoen Miss Sugarshack

    2. Was war die Make-Up Sünde deiner Jugend?

    4. Welche 3 Make-Up Produkte würdest du aus deinem brennenden Kosmetikschränkchen als erstes retten?
Ok, mal abgesehen davon, dass ich bei einem Feuer wohl kaum an Make-up denken wuerde: Catrice Photo Finish Foundation in "Rosy Beige", schwarzer Essence Gel Eyeliner, Urban Decay Primer Potion

    5. Zu welchen Beautyritualen musst du dich zwingen?
    Augenbrauen zupfen, Naegel ablackieren

    7. See oder Freibad?

    Autor: Uwe Tellkamp
    Theater: Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
    Premiere: 20.11.2010
    Regie: Tilman Gersch

    going topless

The sun is out, the temperatures have risen. Great...just not for the untrained eye wandering around England. Skin is on display, loads of it. Sometimes white, sometimes resembling a grilled chicken. Big tattoos, small tattoos. Hairy bodies and shaved ones.
The one aspect of it that grosses me out most?! Topless men!

What the hell are they thinking?! It is not cool, not sporty and certainly not sexy. No matter if you have a six pack or a potbelly - get a shirt !!!

    a day with Edvard Munch

On tuesday morning I finally made my way to Frankfurt to see the extremely popular exhibition "Edvard Munch. Der moderne Blick" .

It was really worth it (especially as I only paid half of the normal entry price through a Groupon voucher I got a while ago) though very very crowded. Many school groups blocking entire corners, not great. I might like kids, sometimes, but certainly no groups.
Another negative point: you can't take any normal sized handbag in and get asked to put the in a locker.
Ok fine, but: why do you get told that AFTER walking up to the 2. floor and not while you are still downstairs? And you could ask the visitors a bit more friendly...spoilt by the London museums which don't mind Primark bags the size of a house and are normally quite friendly and helpful. Anyway...

The actual exhibition. Edvard Munch is the Norwegian painter that most people will only know by the famous "Scream" painting. This wasn't on display, no version of it at all (and he certainly likes several versions of the same topic). What unites nearly all paintings are the extremely powerful and lively colours. Colourwise they would make a cheerful addition to most living rooms...and then you look at the titles and have a closer look. Deathbed, murderer, fight, crying woman, vampires, etc.

You see that he suffered all his life from a variety of serious problems (e.g. bi-polar disorder). But maybe that is part of what makes the art so powerful. They transfer a strong and often unpleasant meaning - but still look "good" so the viewer doesn't get scared of but drawn in even deeper.
An amazing artist - you don't do him justice by only looking at "Scream", I have bought a book about him and wanna find out more now that the paintings have inspired me! Hardly ever seen a better use of colours...

PS: The exhibition is still on until the 28.5. so hurry up!

    Der Kleine Horrorladen

    Musik: Alan Menken
    Buch und Texte: Howard Ashman
    Theater: jugend-club-theater, Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
    Premiere: 19.12.2009
    Regie: Iris Limbarth

    creepy creepers

And another hype has started through blogs, online shops and magazines. Creepers! The fairly bulky shoes with the flat platform. Remember?

First are the really retro/mod ones

I sort of like them but would have no idea how to wear them. I'm not cool enough that they would naturally fit into my wardrobe and to wear them with "normal" clothes like a skirt looks adorable on Amelie Poulain but like a bull dyke (no offence meant) wearing safety shoes on me.

The other variety makes me smile...gosh, how much I liked them in school.

Grade 6 and 7 I remember wearing them all the time. By the way, that's were one of my first shoe related trauma results from - it never took long until the fabric broke on the side and the shoe was ruined. Since then I'm scared that my more fragile and/or cheap shoes will break anytime.

Will I celebrate my very own revival and get some? Probably! Will you?

    Naked...finally

After reading what feels like 1001 blog posts about this wonderful eyeshadow palette and prowling around it again and again, I have done it:
I ordered the original Urban Decay Naked palette yesterday (which, right now, costs "only" 32,40pounds here) and I´m anticipating the arrival now. Hopefully I will be just as happy with all the neutral shades as everyone else seems to be...if it is as brilliant as the Urban Decay Primer Potion than it´s going to be love at first sight.

    Romeo und Julia

Musik: Sergej Prokofjew und Michael Nyman
    Theater: Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
    Premiere: 25.02.2012
    Choreographie: Stephan Thoss

    irrational angst

Yesterday I met up for a coffee with a friend and we talked about synaesthesia and being sensitive when it comes to poeple, situations...and buildings. It´s hard to explain it but I seem to have very finely tuned antennas when I enter buildings. Some instantly give me a "good" feeling...inspire me, cheer me up or make me feel at home. Others seem to make me sad, uncomfortable or nervous...it´s a thing I have experienced since I can remember but it´s very hard to put into words. Maybe you can relate to this, maybe not...

But one thing is special and really really strange: I am afraid of Antoni Gaudi´s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona!

The massive church that is still unfinished and will be for more years to come. I don´t like it...I don´t like looking at it, if I see a photo I feel strange...
I have never been to Barcelona, have never seen anything particular about this church, never read up on it. But I see a picture and feel really uncomfortable and want to look away (looking for a picture to blog already was challenging and I now picked one that isn´t too horrible, close up´s are a no go).
I have no explanation for it at all. It is weird, I am aware that you think now that I should consider therapy but maybe I am not the only one out there?
Let me know if you have something similar - a completely irrational fear of a building or place you never even have been near! Have I been killed while building the church in a former life? Does some inner voice want to prevent me from visiting the place? Is something in my brain simply linked wrong? Inexplicable...

    An Education

‎I’m going to Paris and I’m going to smoke and listen to Jacques Brel and wear black.

    director: Lone Scherfig
    year: 2009
with: Carey Mulligan, Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Rosamund Pike, etc.

story: Early 60s in London - Jenny is dreaming of living a bohemian-intellectual life in Paris while her parents want her to go to Oxford. Then she meets David, a 30 something bon vivant and her life changes...

what I liked: I could instantly connect with Jenny - the dream of living in Paris surrounded by Camus, Brel and Gauloises sounds only too familiar. Not knowing which path to follow, being tempted by a luxurious lifestyle and a charming grown-up man...yep, fully understandable. The film is eyecandy as well, fantastic 60s fashion and Carrey Mulligan being my new girl crush.
what I disliked: Peter Sarsgaard is not really my type otherwise I would have been even more obsessed about how much I can identify with Jenny...;-)

verdict: If you were the sort of teenager too who felt much more grown-up then your mates, this could be your film. If you love the 60s, anyway. It´s thought-provoking, stylish and realistic and Carrey Mulligan is simply stunning.

    Monday 14 May 2012

    Once

    director: John Carney
    year: 2006
with: Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová, etc.

plot: He is a street musician in Dublin, she sells roses to make a living. Both have a history, both are united by their love of music and talent...a different take on a "boy meets girl" story.

I liked: Gosh, it sounds so shallow but: everything. The story is so honest and touching, the music is simply divine and is imprinted in my mind since I first heard it. You just feel like you live in the midst of those normal people in the Dublin the tourist doesn´t see. One of those films that makes me happy to be alive (I know, sounds kitschy but you know...)
I disliked: First time I didn´t like the ending. I have to confess I shed quite a lot of tears and the open end left me somehow unsatisfied and sad. But now when I watch it again and again (as I do with my favourite films) there is nothing to dislike anymore...

verdict: *sigh* 86 minutes of fantastic music and a sincere and candid story that warms your heart without any silly effects or cinematographic tricks

    Sunday 13 May 2012

    13 Semester

    Regie: Frieder Wittich
    Jahr: 2009

    Jane Eyre

    director: Cary Joji Fukunaga
    year: 2011
with: Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, etc.

plot: Come on, you probably have read the novel, haven't you? Jane Eyre grows up as an orphan, first with her evil minded family, later in a hardcore boarding school. After those years she finds work as a governess at Thornfield Hall and meets the owner, Mr. Rochester...and then the problems do only start...

what I liked: the dark and gloomy northern setting, the nearly abstract and horror film like music
what I didn´t like: seems stupid to dislike something about the story here as the film simply followed the book, but - there is so much evil happening to Jane that after a while I shut down and couldn´t feel any compassion - no tears, no feelings, nothing. And a shallow comment, Michael Fassbender is unfortunately not sexy...
verdict:I think the film does the novel justice, is atmospheric and immaculate but is lacking opportunity to grip the viewer and move him emotionally.

    Saturday 12 May 2012

    The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

    director: John Madden
    year: 2012
with: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, etc.

plot: In order to escape their lonely/poor/boring lives in England several “elderly” people travel to India to stay in the “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” which promises a much needed change of scenery. At arrival they find something completely different to what the shiny brochure promised...and each’s life takes a very different turn.
I liked: The league of absolutely fantastic actors (even though Bill Nighy played Bill Nighy again...but I don’t mind that as I like Bill Nighy), the story being funny but also having a lot of depth and thoughtful moments, the chance to identify yourself with the characters (and not necessary in a good way), the beautiful colourful setting
I disliked: Nothing! A film very much to my taste.

verdict: A typical English tragicomedy bringing together the very best of actors and a beautiful setting. Very much a feel-good movie (for me at least :-)).

    Koblenz

On tuesday I took the train to Koblenz - a really pretty small town on the Rhine and the Mosel. Wandered about, enjoyed the lovely weather, took some photos and had some absolutely fantastic ice-cream. Recommendable!

    Race for Life 2012

In case you haven´t noticed it yet:
I will take part in another Race for Life to support Cancer Research UK this year. After last year´s fun and (financial) success walking the 10k in about 90min I thought I have to make it a bit more challenging this time. I will run (or at least attempt it) 5k in Richmond this time.
I´m not sporty at all so this is a BIG challenge but one that is worth it.

In memory of my mum, in memory of everyone that has lost the fight against this gruesome disease and for everyone that is fighting it - please support me and thereby Cancer Research  no matter how small the donation is. Just click on the button in the sidebar. Thank you already :-)

    pat-a-cake

One of the details I only noticed cause my husband commented on it.
No matter if it´s morning, afternoon or evening - if weekday or weekend: Germans are very often seen carrying those plastic cake containers with them. Sometimes the classic round one, sometimes the square ones, sometimes filled with delicious looking and smelling cakes, sometimes with only some crumbs left.

I think those boxes are available in England (how could they not with a great shop like Lakeland existing?!) but I can´t say that I see them often. Do Brits not share their cakes? Do they not home-bake? Do they never use public transport or feet? Or: Are Germans a nation of wanna-be pastry chefs?
    A miracle...

    old school

Last thursday wasn´t really my day. First I lost time with too many late and cancelled busses and trains, then I was forced to pay a transaction fee at a cash machine for the first time ever (and hopefully the last time too) and in the end managed to not get one of those free goodybags they handed out at uni this day...boo.
But one thing happened that still made my day. While queueing at that cash machine from hell (aka the wrong bank) the girl in front of me turned round and asked "I love your bag. Where did you get it?".
Me! The bag lover! Getting complimented on this days choice!!! Woohoo!!!
Unfortunately it was my 20 year old school bag so I couldn´t help much with actual shopping advise but still, I tried my best.

This made me so happy that I can easily overlook the fact that she used the formal "sie" instead of the informal and more young and student like "you"...I´m not a student any more, I look old, but: apparently with style :-)

    Allure reloaded

so here my attempt of a swatch to show those who are interested how Essie´s "Allure" looks on my nails.

I´m not the best model for "projects" like that - I never care about my cuticles unless they are damaged, my fingers resemble sausages, I rarely apply more than 2 coats of varnish and I hate the feeling of buffing them.
But I like this colour for being not a colour. The pink only comes from my nails themself, Allure is simply a french manicure whiteish paint - but an elegant nice one.
