A Streetcar Named Desire

theatre: Young Vic, London
author: Tennesse Williams
director: Benedict Andrews

seen at cinema in October during one of the NT live screenings

plot: Faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois comes to visit her pregnant sister in a seedy section of New Orleans. Stella's boorish husband, Stanley Kowalski, not only regards Blanche's aristocratic affectations as a royal pain but also thinks she's holding out on inheritance money that rightfully belongs to Stella. On the fringes of sanity, Blanche is trying to forget her checkered past and start life anew. Attracted to Stanley's friend Mitch, she glosses over the less savory incidents in her past, but she soon discovers that she cannot outrun that past, and the stage is set for her final, brutal confrontation with her brother-in-law.

what I liked: I´m not usually a fan of seeing theatre on stage but as I couldn´t get a ticket for the real thing this was the best option. All actors were good and through the contantly revolving stage in the middle of the audience you were pulled in the action from the very beginning and fortunately the characters didn´t get overpowered by the set design. Gillian Anderson was the perfect Blanche - childish, annoying, seductive, out of touch with reality and needy - a Carrie Bradshaw who has lost grip of her life.

what I didn´t like: Gillian Anderson surely was terrific but her high pitched whiny Southern singsong got a little bit annoying after a while.

verdict: Although it is quite a long and exhausting play I never drifted away and enjoyed it a lot. Brilliant evening in cinema that could have only be topped by an evening in theatre.

Querbeat

Musikalische Leitung: Sebastian Hernandez-Laverny
Künstlerische Leitung: Axel Goldbeck
Theater: Staatstheater Mainz
Premiere: 21.11.2014

Mein Leben.

Autor: Uwe Kröger, Claudio Honsal
veröffentlicht: 2014

Inhalt:

Schade.

MANIFEST 2083

author: Christian Lollike
theatre/ensemble: S/H, Copenhagen

seen on the 29th June during the New Plays From Europe Festival in Wiesbaden

plot: What made Norwegian assassin Anders Breivik putting on his police uniform, placing a bomb in Oslo and wreaking a massacre on Utøya island? The answer apparently is easy: Breivik wrote a "Manifest" to explain the necessity of his actions. Based on this disturbing material next to court documents the author Christian Lollike explores the search for Breiviks motives and his right-wing philosophy that is not limited to Norway.

verdict: It doesn´t happen often that 90min of theatre leave me speechless (especially not when it is the last of 11 plays seen in 10 days).
Here the play finished, I had to take a deep breath and go outside for a few minutes on my own to compose myself again before talking to others.
The actor Olaf Højgaard jumps in and out of the character of Anders Breivik. He reads his texts and comments and critizes and ridicules them. He prepares to build a bomb out of fertilizer as Breivik did, starts working out and taking steroids, he slowly turns into him as the performance progresses.
The audience doesn´t know what to feel anymore - is the fiction, is it real? Is he a commentator, is he playing a character? The mix of different texts and Højgaards visual transformation developes a hypnotic pull of horror and fascination. Breivik listened to "Lux Aeterna" by Clint Mansell on his Ipod during the massacre, when this music plays on stage and Breivik/Højgaard points his machine gun into the audience my blood ran cold.
Controversial, multi-layered, disturbing and an outstanding actor - wow.

Die Dreigroschenoper

Autor: Bertold Brecht
Musik: Kurt Weill
Theater: Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
Regie: Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson
Premiere: 13.09.2014

Inhalt:

Baumeister Solness

Autor: Henrik Ibsen
Theater: Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
Regie: Ingo Kerkhof
Premiere: 14.09.2014

Lilli/HEINER Intra Muros

Autor: Lucie Depauw
Regie: Brit Bartkowiak
Theater: Staatstheater Mainz

Normansfield Theatre

Two weeks ago it was Open House Weekend again in London - I had a few things on my list (the choice was massive with more than 800 buildings taking part) but my cold and the fact all things seemed to be very busy held me back.
Nevertheless we made it to one venue - the Langdon Centre in Teddington.
Inside the main building is an original Victorian theatre hidden, the Normansfield Theatre, one of the last private ones left.
There was a tour but we were left alone to take photos and explore this impressive venue on our own.
The theatre studies BA in me was having a party and so did the photographer :-)
Already looking forward to the Open House Weekend next year to explore much more unusual things right in front of my doorstep!

PS: And if you think that this place looks vaguely familiar - it has been used in series one "Downton Abbey" when the Dowager Countess hands her "Best Rose" award to Mr. Molesley senior.

Richard III.

theatre: Trafalgar Studios, London
author: William Shakespeare
director: Jamie Lloyd

with: Martin Freeman, Philip Cumbus, Jo Stone-Fewings, Gina McKee, etc.

plot: In the aftermath of civil war, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, makes a hateful resolution to claw his way to political power at any cost. A master of manipulation, subtle wit and beguiling charm, he orchestrates his unlawful ascent by spinning a ruthless web of deceit and betrayal. His staunch ambition soon begins to weigh heavy, as the new ruler finds himself utterly alone and steeped in dread, forced to answer for his bloody deeds and face the horrifying consequences.

what I liked: I sat directly on the stage so was never further away than five metres from all the (bloody) action which was great. The actors all were very good despise the limited space they had. Even though the Mad Men inspired 60´s wood panelled and spider plant office set has been seen several times on stage (more so in director´s theatre dorado Germany) I liked it and didn't miss a Tower of London replica or likewise.

what I didn't like: It is a tricky play to understand with all it's plotting and machinations and this shortened version didn´t make it any clearer so some preparation is required. Martin Freeman is an odd Richard, not sly and lacking any "beguiling charm" but just a short, cold-blooded and mousy pencil pusher.

verdict: A very interesting performance that was refreshingly modern compared to some of the still quite stuffy London productions.
The entire ensemble was great but there is the thought that Martin Freeman was only casted because of his popularity. On my way out I nearly slipped on all the stage blood drips, that´s Shakespeare for you!

curtain call

In Germany the applause after a theatre performance or a concert is usually long, the actors have a pre-written routine who walks out in front of the curtain when and with whom. If the audience hated the evening they will applaude as often put in the reviews only "politely" for several minutes. During some especially emotional performances you will get some "Bravo!" or "Buuuuuh!".
Normally the curtain shuts, the last note is played and the last word spoken and there is a small moment of silence - partly insecurity on the part of the audience if it´s finished now or not, partly to breath out and let the just experienced sink in a little.

In the UK this is quite different. Normally the applause has a strict routine as well and doesn´t take longer than 2-3 minutes. There can be some excitement expressed through "Wooooo" shouting and feet stomping (which in some of the dilapidated theatres in London can get very scary, I´m only reminding you of this). There are exceptions from the rule as just experienced in The Royal Albert Hall after a Prom concert were the audience got quite exstatic and applauded for well over five minutes.
Another difference - last word spoken and: boom, the clapping starts.
No moment for reflection, no nothing.

So, if you are British and visit a theatre or concert hall in Germany - don´t get bored and clap rhythmically along if you really liked it.
If you are German then don´t be surprised or count it as dissatisfaction with the performance when the applause is short.

edit: As Alice quite rightly pointed out - the same goes for cinema. In the majority of cinemas in Germany the light stays out the first few minutes of the end credits, in the UK (and outside of arthouse cinemas) people storm out straightaway and don´t give a shit about the credits.

MUTTERSPRACHE MAMELOSCHN

author: Marianna Salzmann
theatre/ensemble: Deutsches Theater Berlin

seen on the 21st June during the New Plays From Europe Festival in Wiesbaden

plot: Three women, three generations, three life plans: grandmother, mother, and daughter. What was it like to be a Jew in East Germany fifty years ago? What does it mean today?

verdict: If you enjoyed the film "8 femmes" you will love this play.
It´s a joy to listen to these women fight, bitch and gaining insights to their inner turmoils.
Sometimes you want to run on stage and tell them to just leave each other alone...but everyone will recognize some or more typical mother/ daughter situations and conflicts.
The play would be nothing without its stunning actresses, especially Anita Vulesica (which I only knew from German tv crime series "Ein Fall für Zwei", can you believe it!), Gabriele Heinz and Natalia Belitski (even though I found her acting a bit too nervy and a bit too much).
Thoughtprovoking, clever and entertaining - brilliant.

Skylight

theatre: Wyndham´s Theatre
author: David Hare
director: Stephen Daldry

with: Bill Nighy, Carey Mulligan, Matthew Beard

plot: On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra Hollis receives an unexpected visit from her former lover, Tom Sergeant, a successful and charismatic restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires.

what I liked: Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan, what more do I need to say. The play itself is somewhat dated but nevertheless the discussed issues are still up-to-date. I was especially delighted by the clever and atmospheric stage design!

what I didn't like: Nothing really, it´s only that Bill Nighy is (at least in my eyes) such a loveable person - Carey Mulligan on the other side acted slightly stiff which gave the already jaundiced teacher character an even more unlikeable egde so the verbal battle between the two never seemed fully equal.

verdict: Not sure if Bill Nighy really is a splendid actor as whatever he acts - he always is "Bill Nighy".  But I don´t care, I enjoyed the play and it was wonderful to see him live on stage.

PS: There is some real chopping and cooking going on on stage - this distracted me somewhat. I hate to think it all gets binned each and every night...and is it really normal to pour milk into a bolognese sauce?!?

IZ

author: Ahmet Sami Özbudak
theatre/ensemble: GalataPerform, Istanbul

seen on the 26th June during the New Plays From Europe Festival in Wiesbaden

plot: The tranvestite in 2010, the communist in 1980 and the Greek-Orthodox sisters in 1955 - they all live in the same flat in Istanbul Tarlabaşı. They are outsiders of their time, each of them leaving traces behind - scents are lingering in the air, objects get moved, voices of those who argued, loved and laughed here are heard.

verdict: The idea of showing all three plot lines at the same time and in the same space is clever and new to me. In Istanbul this play apparently gets performed in a real flat which I'm sure makes it quite intense and eerie in a way. As intelligent and fresh the idea and the stage design are, in my opinion the plotlines let it down. I don't particularly care about the fate of all the portrayed outsiders and little is done to characterise them properly.

Zoran Đinđić

author: Oliver Frljić
theatre/ensemble: Oliver Frljić & Ensemble

seen on 21st June in Wiesbaden during the  New Plays From Europe Festival

plot:  Zoran Đinđić, elected Serbia’s Prime Minister in 2001, followed a democratic, Western-oriented strategy that made him the enemy of the country’s communist and nationalist camps. The extradition of war criminals and his fight against organized crime mobilized further opposition and on 12 March 2013, he was shot by a sniper. Oliver Frljić and his company take this assassination as a starting point to examine the context and circumstances that led up to it. The text is based on interviews conducted with the actors and persons who either were close to Đinđić or are continuing his political work. Central questions are those of collective guilt and the options for action each individual has in times of chaos. The author says: “Of course it is wrong to commit a crime, but it is equally criminal to just sit around and do nothing. [...] It is my aim to make the audience aware and to confront them with their own responsibility. That is why the actors are constantly addressing the audience.”

verdict:  Sometimes I get punished for randomly chosing plays without getting any background information before. This evening was one of them, if not the worst.
The biggest problem is/was: I don´t know anything about Serbian/Croatian politics apart from recognizing a few names from the news. Therefore I couldn´t understand any of the depicted problems.
This "play" wants to provoke and it certainly does using strong images and actions that are way to blatant for my taste. A burning church, people in body bags, hands dunked in blood...then comes the extremely harsh, fast and loud language that forced me giving up on the translation at some stage.
All the names and accusations I couldn´t grasp anyway.
My "highlight" came right at the end (fortunately) - well, now I can say that I have witnessed an actress puking live on stage. Thank you very much indeed. The emetophobic in me was delighted, not.
Not an evening for the faint hearted, not one that does me wanna find out anything more about all the conflicts past and present in their countries. I was just very, very happy to go home.

KAPELLE EIDGENÖSSISCH MOOS

author: Ruedi Häusermann
theatre/ensemble: Kapelle Eidgenössisch Moos

seen on 22th June in Wiesbaden during the  New Plays From Europe Festival

plot: Ruedi Häusermann (musician/director), Herwig Ursin (musician/actor) and Jan Ratschko (musician/actor) dedicate this performance to their secret passion, the Swiss folk-dance Ländler. Eidgenössisch Moos is a Ländler band, but not one of the conventional kind. In the spirit of experimentation, they open our minds to peripheral matters, interference and friction, creating space for the wayward and rattling local traditions. “Our theatre work can be seen as an attempt to recapture. Not by accusing a way of thinking that is alien to us, but by making it clear that an ‘ideal world’ means something quite different to us. We want to show these ‘sole tenants of all things Swiss’ that they don’t own this music. It’s a cultural asset – a magnificent cultural asset!”

verdict: It was a nice show - but not a play. Quirky and creative ideas like drawing a mountain scene live on the overhead projector or inventing new musical instruments are wonderful and together with the beautiful singing and traditional Swiss folk music it alltogether created a humorous and atmospheric evening. It is misleading though to look for a play, a plot, in this. There is the vague story of a cancelled gig but you can ignore this. A very different evening which I enjoyed (and even understood the Schwyzerdütsch!) but it might not have been the best choice for this festival.

ORCHIDEE

author: Pippo Delbono
theatre/ensemble: Compagnia Pippo Delbono

seen on 24th June in Wiesbaden during the  New Plays From Europe Festival

plot: Pippo Delbono is one of Italy’s most unusual theatre makers. “Orchids” may be his most profound and emotional work yet and has been presented internationally to great acclaim. Accompanied by a brilliant company, Delbono plays with the entire spectrum of theatrical resources. The play begins in death and dances, sings and plays itself back to life from the void. Full of spirit and love, “Orchids” paints a picture of our world: It’s garish, colourful, cruel and brutal – but it’s the only world we have.

verdict: What a confusing night that was! There is text spoken off stage (in beautiful Italian I have to say...I love this language), there is music, lots of music. Music that I happen to adore like the violin concert by Philip Glass or "Child in time" by Deep Purple.
There are photos and video snippets. There are actors/dancers, some disabled some not. It all is supposed to say something about life, about Delbono´s mothers death. Sometimes they run around naked, sometimes they dance, sometimes they mime. It all is very personal, we get a glimpse of the life and soul of Delbono and when he runs around the stage and smiles like a child it feels rude to not like him.
But all in all it is just a confused collage with people randomly added, all pretending it is still the 70´s and we are all hippies. There are definite reminders of the works of Pina Bausch but they seem hollow and lack a certain something. Not bad but extremely weird.

The best moment for me happened during the final applause - one of the disabled actors takes a bow, looks into the audience and yawns. For me the most honest, heartfelt and undeliberately self-reflecting moment.

MET MIJN VADER IN BED (WEGENS OMSTANDIGHEDEN)

author: Magne van den Berg
theatre/ensemble: Toneelschuur Producties, Haarlem

seen on 23rd June in Wiesbaden during the  New Plays From Europe Festival

plot: A father and daughter talk on the phone. In 28 scenes, they chat, argue, cry, fall silent or just leave a message on the answer- phone. Their wife and mother has died recently and while the daughter, who lives in the city, looks back with nostalgia to her parents’ house in the country, her father has already found a new partner and is trying to move on. So they talk about what should happen to the old furniture, photos, the urn ... Behind the everyday topics, deep emotions are lurking and so sometimes the only recourse is to talk about the weather. After her mother’s death, the daughter spent some nights in her father’s bed – to give him comfort, or so she says. Now she would like to get rid of the bed ... “Father and daughter share a great loss”, says dramatist Magne van den Berg, “and this creates a close bond between them; at the same time it creates distance, because they both try to survive any way they can: They react very differently and sometimes cruelly, because each one forgets the other’s pain.”

verdict: What a subtle and quiet play compared to most other festival entries.
Not much is going on visually when father and daughter talk (or not talk really) on the phone, most of the time a curtain divides them and only in short flashbacks we see them united again.
Not much is going on in the text either, the emotions are mostly encoded in apparently banal descriptions of the current weather situation. But they are there if you pay attention.

I overheard discussions in the audience if the possibilty of incest implied by the title was not thematized enough. I don´t share their opinion - for me this possible ambiguity does not not really exist. This father/daughter relationship is not the easiest but certainly not an unusual one as well so reading an abuse case into it would ruin the entire play.
Moving, even if not very exciting.

author: Nis-Momme Stockmann
theatre/ensemble: Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden

seen on 6th June in Wiesbaden, shortly before the New Plays From Europe Festival this is part of

plot: When playwright Nis-Momme Stockmann was author-in-residence at Schauspiel Frankfurt from 2009 to 2012, his daily commute would take him from the deprived area of Bornheim to the gleaming towers of the city centre. This blatant discrepancy inspired him to write about the odyssey of a banker in crisis. His protagonist has long been in the service of a system that he now questions radically. In the middle of his life, he feels like he no longer belongs. And so he decides to undermine the system from within, to bring about the ruin of the banking sector which will result in a reinvention of the entire world.

verdict: Some scenes are fairly conventional, some more absurd. The banker is played fantasticly by Hanns Jörg Krumpholz and seeing ancient Zygmunt Apostol on stage is always worth it. But there is lots of talking, lots of criticism and nothing really grips the audience. Instead of being confronted with the problems capitalism brings I got slightly bored. Unfortunately forgotten the moment you get home again

HEROES (Just for one day)

author: Vincent Hennebicq
theatre/ensemble: Théâtre National, Brussels

seen on 20th June in Wiesbaden during the  New Plays From Europe Festival

plot: “We can be heroes. Just for one day”. This line from a David Bowie song was part of the inspiration for Vincent Hennebicq’s first play. It tells the story of an old man near the end of his life. Realizing how much he has missed and what a relief it would be to tear off the straightjacket of laziness and convention, he changes his costume and becomes Popi Jones: a rock star. Finally, he dares to say what he has been silent about all his life. He remembers the love of his life and braves his neglected son’s anger. Hennebicq turns his play into a veritable rock concert. Jean Pierre Baudson plays Popi Jones as if the role had been tailor-made for him, the rest of the company become “Les Popettes”. Only Raven Ruëll, who plays Popi’s son and has written his own lines, stays on the sidelines and doesn’t enter the rockstar fantasy.

verdict: It started well as I realised that I could undertstand much more of the Belgian French than I did the evening before at the play from Paris. The evening is more of a sad and associative musical revue than a wordy play - might seem a bit shallow for some but I liked it as the band was fantastic. The story of Popi Jones gets told in songs, unconnected scenes and hints - you have to pay attention otherwise the rock concert aspect overwhelms the intention a bit (or is it the intention?).
Maybe not a revelation but a play which potentially could be recreated by another theatre one day.
