The Young Victoria

director: Jean-Marc Vallée
year: 2009
with: Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, etc.

plot: A dramatization of the turbulent first years of Queen Victoria's rule, and her enduring romance with Prince Albert.

what I liked: The settings, some scenes were filmed at Ham House, Osterley Park or Arundel Castle, all places I have visited and feel familiar with.

what I didn´t like: The film never really starts, never picks up some speed, romance or suspense. Scene after scene happens and after one hour I´m still not "in" it. You don´t feel for Victoria nor Albert, don´t care about what happens next.

verdict: Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) has written it, the beautiful backdrop of Ham House, one of the most exciting times in British history, some brilliant actors and some gorgeous costumes - it all sounded too good to be true but in the end it didn´t work for me.
I was fighting to stay focused on the plot, couldn´t have cared less of what happened to the main characters and in the end was left disappointed and bored by this strangely cold, uninvolved and passive film.
